Notable updates and improvements to the MediaINFO Digital Library platform.
A switch on the browse page turns a listing into its duplicates — the same file imported twice, a rescan, a crop, a copied passage — and a compare panel to decide on. More like this now starts from any photograph, region or article, and the filters keep working inside the neighbours.
A toggle beside the search box turns it into a question box: describe what you want in plain language and the request becomes a search, with every filter it applied shown as a chip you can remove. Available when licensed.
Layout analysis turns a page into its stories — headline, columns, picture and caption held together — each with the order a reader reads it in, in either direction. An article can then be searched, opened, edited, compared, cited and downloaded on its own.
Stills are taken where the picture actually changes rather than at fixed intervals, and only the frames worth keeping are stored — which is what a picture search matches a video on. A licensed video analysis adds chapters that cover the whole recording, each titled, summarised and seekable.
Faces are located in images and in video and matched to person records, so a name given once reaches every other appearance. Public-people packs, available in certain countries and regions, label public figures automatically — and the people your team names stay private to your installation.
Recognition built for what archives actually hold — newspapers, books, catalogue cards, forms and manuscripts, printed or handwritten, in either reading direction — and trainable on the hand or the typeface it has not met yet.
Audio tracks from video and audio files are transcribed with their timings, so a search that matches a spoken phrase returns the moment it was said rather than the whole recording. The same pass produces the captions and subtitles.
An update is fetched and verified, the installation and its configuration are snapshotted, and the updated system has to pass a health gate and a functional check before the update commits. Any failure before that point rolls the installation back automatically.
A query typed in one language reaches material written in others: it is matched against the extracted text and against every translated rendition, and the hit is highlighted where it sits on the original page. The passage is marked as a translation, and the original characters never move.
A search re-index no longer re-analyses text and images that have not changed, and unchanged curated metadata is carried over with them — so a broad re-index costs re-indexing rather than re-analysis. The similarity indexing behind More like this now tops itself up on its own.
The catalogue is exposed to aggregation networks over the sector's harvesting standard, in Dublin Core and the Europeana Data Model, with sets built from your own browse facets and the same mappings feeding structured data on public pages. Nothing is exposed until an administrator chooses it.
Pages, photographs, video, audio, documents and 3D objects open on one surface. Deep zoom is served from the original, with no derivatives cut ahead of time, and two objects can be compared side by side with their panes panning and zooming together.
Dates can be entered, stored, displayed, searched and filtered in both Hijri and Gregorian — with calendar-aware timeline facets, Arabic-Indic and Persian numerals, and a calendar each user chooses for themselves.
