Digitálna knižnica UKB: five centuries of print, searchable to the word

The University Library in Bratislava keeps its digitised newspapers, journals, books, sheet music and manuscripts in one library on MediaINFO Digital Library, open to anyone.

The library

Digitálna knižnica UKB

The University Library in Bratislava chose MediaINFO Digital Library in 2012 to bring together digitised periodicals and books that had been spread across separate systems. Its digital library now holds more than 1.6 million pages. Nearly all of them are periodicals, dailies, weeklies and magazines from the 16th century to today, in Slovak, German and Hungarian above all.

Every document except the manuscripts has its text recognised, so a search finds a word on every page where it occurs and marks it there. Among the books are editions of Comenius's Janua Linguarum Reserata and Orbis Pictus. Among the manuscripts is the Bašagić collection of Islamic manuscripts in Arabic, Turkish and Persian, inscribed on UNESCO's Memory of the World register.
